The salon business is one of the sought out small businesses in Kenya. With Nairobi being the center of budding businesses, it is important for potential startups to be aware of market pointers for maximum profit.

Like most successful businesses that start small, salons require patience, commitment and continuous re-investment into the initial stock. Some of the key factors to consider when starting and growing a salon business include:

  • Strategic placement of your salon is crucial especially for the initial kick off. One can decide to place their business in busy areas or in a neighborhood with previous experience. Salons in busy areas like KM and Ngara have to incur higher costs of rentals while those based in known neighborhoods with market centres will incur less costs. It’s important to focus on building a clientele than to put up with crazy competitions that mainstreams put up.

  • he type of equipment you get for your salon business will depend on the scale of work and budget. For those starting small, the basic equipment include:

    • Hair Dryer
    • Flat iron
    • Blow Dryer
    • Adjustable Chair
    • Water Heater
    • Water Storage Tank
    • Sink
    • Chairs
    • Adjustable Drawer
    • Hair Sets
    • Towels and Apron

The bulk of these salon equipment can be bought from us (salon warehouse) at affordable prices.

    1. 1. Management
    2. Most people start by servicing the clients themselves then take on a managerial role after hiring. Choosing your team wisely and keeping them motivated will be a key factor in the longevity of your business. It’s important to acquire important skills in managing finances and budgeting as your business proceeds

    3. 2. Budget
    4. Drawing a budget is important for your business to grow. Initially, knowing the prices of equipment and running costs is crucial. Later on, you’ll need to budget for expanding the business. The budget will determine how many people you can hire as the client base increases.

    5. 3. Clientele
    6. As the saying goes ‘customer is king’. Making your premises presentable will attract the usual walk in customers. The rest of the customers will be referrals and word to word marketing. Spread the word to the various groups you’re involved in and offer discounts when you can to your daily interactions like your estate mama mboga. Eventually when the client base has been established, provide a working plan for both your employees and your customers. Suggest dates for their next hairstyle do and call them to find out how their maintenance is doing. A good client relationship is the ultimate success of any business, salons included.

    7. 4. Re-Investment
    8. When drawing the budget, it’s important to set aside money for re-investment to grow the business. Keep yourself updated on current trades and equip your salon more to meet the changing market demands.

In conclusion, salons are a great investment if you have a passion for both the craft and the business. It is possible to start small and make profits in millions eventually, if proper strategic steps are taken.

The journey to build Salon Warehouse was embarked on 22 years ago by Blossom Sadiq. Her mission, to fill the gap in the Hair & Beauty Industry by improving the standards of the equipment and products used and sold in the market. Passion met determination and when the air-stewardess, by profession, got married and settled down in Kenya, she decided to journey into the industry she had found new love in.

The business started out as a retailer selling beauty products in 1995, before it grew to what we are now. The journey was not smooth and effort and patience was paramount. Back then when Blossom started out, the feel of a “Professional Salon”, wasn’t yet felt or known by the people. She thus started at the grassroots by organizing a number of workshops, talks and demonstrations by her doorstep, to educate salon owners, beauticians, hairdressers and product manufacturers about quality and professional procedures, products and equipment to use.

In 1998, the service of Consultation, Design and Layout was introduced by Mr. Sadiq. This was to ensure the complete package of the Professional feel, was delivered to the client. For one to run a Professional Salon, it needs to have the professional quality equipment and products, use professional procedures and be structured out professionally, in turn, quality equipment and products results to better skin care, elegant hair and eventually, a happy client, and that is what Salon Warehouse works to achieve. We believe we have a social responsibility to fulfill through mentorship and training, to create awareness about having and keeping a Professional Salon with quality services.

We are humbled that Salon Warehouse’s story was 1 st told in a newspaper article as we celebrated 10 years of existence and the 2 nd time as we celebrated 15 years and now privileged to tell it ourselves when we are 22years old.
